About the Speaker:
Sushanta Dattagupta, born 19 December 1947, is a physicist. Following M. Sc., Physics, Calcutta University in 1968, he worked as Lecturer at Presidency College. In 1969, he went for his doctoral research at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York. He was a postdoctoral Fellow at Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh (1973-75) and University of Alberta, Edmonton (1975-76).
Dattagupta returned to India in 1976 as Scientific Officer, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam. From 1981 to 1986, he worked as Reader at the University of Hyderabad. During 1986 -1999, Dattagupta was a Professor in the new School of Physical Sciences at the Jawaharlal Nehru University. In 1999, he was appointed the Director of the S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata. Following that, he joined as the Founding Director of a new initiative of the Government of India: the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, in 2006. Dattagupta had the opportunity to serve as Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati, which he did between 2011 and 2016.
